Lake Havasu City

Arrived in Lake Havasu on Nov 30th, quite tired from 4 days of fighting headwinds and within 3 hours got kicked out of the Walmart’s parking lot, there is no camping/overnight parking in Lake Havasu except in campgrounds. Found an out of the way spot to spend the night, surrounded by coyotes, but otherwise quiet. I moved into the Lake Havasu State Park for 2 days so I could flush the antifreeze from the trailer and give it, and me, a good cleaning. Dropped into the tourist information centre and gathered materials to plan my stay for the next couple of weeks.

I took in the interpretive cactus garden which was nicely done and very informative.

Saw my first road runner, no coyote (wily or otherwise) in pursuit.

Took in the London Bridge and walked/biked around the island channel. The man most responsible for buying and moving the bridge was Robert McCullough, founder of McCullough chain saws and a famous speed boat racer and designer. His father was friends with Thomas Edison and helped with the move from Menlo Park to Schenectady. He also invested heavily into Edison’s inventions, which made him a very wealthy man. His son carried on with his own business acumen, making his own fortune. A google search, or this website: http://www.golakehavasu.com/about-us/london_bridge1.aspx , will give you all the information you need on the man and the project of creating this tourism destination. Lake Havasu is also considered to be the Fort Lauderdale of the west where spring break swells the population and provides ample entertainment as young people “let it go” with gusto, so I’m told. [Say Scott, spend any time “well wasted” here in your younger years?]

Next up: Boondocking!

My first blogging attempt. BC to AZ

OK. Here we go. I left Creston on the US Thanksgiving Nov 27. Spent 4 days fighting nasty headwinds and managed only 8.4 mpg. My poor truck wasn't happy, but at least there wasn't much snow on the roads. Stayed in rest areas or shopping centres. Didn't even stop in Las Vegas!

Utah has some interesting areas that will require further investigations, probably in the spring or summer.

Welcome to Arizona.

Glad to see the respect given to all Veterans on this highway section. I only took the one picture as people were flying by at 75 mph. To my older brothers!

Arrived in Lake Havasu City, AZ on November 30th. Managed to get kicked out of Walmarts :) as there is no overnight parking here except in a campground or while "dispersed camping" (aka boondocking). The big attraction here is the London Bridge which was moved here from 1968 -1971.

Got to touch history. When the English defeated Napoleon, they melted down his cannons and made these light standards for the bridge while it was in London. They were gas lights then. Google London Bridge for more information, quite the story. Connection to Schenectady, the man who devised this idea and saw it through to completion was Robert McCullough who made his fortune with McCullough chain saws. He worked for General Electric at one point.

It's Christmas eve and I don't have much time so I will leave you with my Christmas Cactus and wish you all a Merry Christmas. Remember the Reason for the Season. More to come, I promise...
